January 30

Happy Birthday to me! (I'm singing, everyone) Happy birthday to me. =========== I share this birth date with many people, including one of my grandfathers. It is also the birth date of an historian I greatly respect, Angie Debo (1890 - 1988). Born in Beattie, Kansas, Debo was nine when her family moved to Marshall, Oklahoma. Very concerned about civil rights, Debo wrote classic books about Indians of Oklahoma. I used many of them in research for articles and an unfinished novel. I appreciated the detail and accuracy of what she presented. Debo was active in the Oklahoma chapter of American Civil Liberties Union, and received the American Historical Association's Award for Scholarly Distinction in 1987. She has been nominated for the Western Writers Hall of Fame (inductee to be announced at the 2008 WWA annual convention.) Check this site to get more information about Angie Debo.
